Designing and Weaving

The art of textiles is a living, breathing activity. The influence and constant stimulation of street scenes, landscapes, architecture and even the objects I have found, provide exciting sources of inspiration.

Whichever image I choose to depict, the first consideration is how to produce a fabric with the same colour and texture. With each project, I enjoy a quiet excitement and anticipation, as every delicate stage moves closer to producing a unique example of textile art.

Choosing the yarn is the first step. If the final colour is to be different, it will need to be dyed. All my fabrics are hand dyed using natural pigments extracted from vegetables and plants.

Next is to design the structure, and select the width and length of the finished fabric.

Only once these preliminary steps are complete is it time to dress the loom.

Introduction to Weaving

The following YouTube video, made by elifestylellc, illustrates some of the preparation and processes in using the loom, needed to create hand-woven textiles. These are virtually the same techniques as used for the past 1000 years! You will have an idea of the amount of time and concentration that goes into producing a single run of fabric.

04 May 2009 — Marc y Petrini works with looms to teach her class the techniques and applications of weaving on a loom. In the video Marcy goes through the many different steps involved in getting the fabric prepared and usable in a pattern on a loom. Marcy also talks about a few of the various techniques her students are using to create vibrant patterns and textures. This video stresses the need to ensure that all working looms should be properly maintained and serviced to ensure proper weaving.
